Pokémon GO: The Ten-Year Legacy A Comprehensive Analysis of the Sociological, Economic and Technological Impact (2016-2025)
Abstract
When the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga theorized the concept of the "magic circle" in his essay Homo Ludens (1938), he described play as an activity separate from ordinary life, confined within precise temporal and spatial limits. In July 2016, Niantic Labs irreversibly broke that circle, pouring the game into streets, parks, places of worship and squares around the world. Nearly a decade later, Pokémon GO can't be dismissed as a blockbuster app or fad; rather, it's the largest experiment in social engineering and behavioral modification ever conducted through a playful interface.
