Secure and Integrated LoRaWAN-5G Platform for Unidirectional Communications
Abstract
The distinct capabilities of Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWAN) and 5G present a compelling case for their integration. This paper proposes a novel architecture that utilizes a 5G network as a backhaul for LoRaWAN, designed to support massive IoT deployments with minimal configuration overhead. This proposal introduces new message formats, enabling the LoRaWAN network server to communicate directly with the 5G core. It extends the 5G framework to handle LoRaWAN-originated sessions to manage device subscriptions and data transmissions. This integration creates a flexible, multi-technology platform that combines the long-range, low-power benefits of LoRaWAN with the high-performance, reliable connectivity of 5G, paving the way for more sophisticated and scalable IoT solutions.
