Abstract

The GRAVITAS research program proposes a fundamental paradigm shift in Information Retrieval (IR) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) by moving beyond traditional static, flat Euclidean vector spaces. Instead, it models semantic space as a dynamic Riemannian manifold where information acts as mass, curving the surrounding semantic geometry. This framework, termed "Semantic General Relativity," draws a direct mathematical analogy to Einstein’s field equations to describe how the distribution of information shapes the "geometry of meaning". Key Mathematical Frameworks: * The Semantic Field Equations: In the continuous model, the relationship between the metric tensor $g_{\mu\nu}$ (defining distances) and the information density $\rho_{\mu\nu}$ is governed by equations of the form $G_{\mu\nu} + \Lambda g_{\mu\nu} = \kappa \rho_{\mu\nu}$. Here, $G_{\mu\nu}$ is the Einstein tensor representing curvature, $\Lambda$ is a cosmological constant for regularization, and $\kappa$ is the semantic plasticity constant.* Navigation via Geodesics: Retrieval is performed by treating a query as a particle that follows the shortest path in curved space, known as a geodesic, which satisfies the equation $\frac{d^2x^\mu}{d\lambda^2} + \Gamma^\mu_{\rho\sigma} \frac{dx^\rho}{d\lambda} \frac{dx^\sigma}{d\lambda} = 0$.* Computational Optimization: To handle large-scale corpora, GRAVITAS utilizes a conformal ansatz, assuming the metric is a deformation of a background metric $\bar{g}_{\mu\nu}$ scaled by a conformal factor $\phi(x)$, expressed as $g_{\mu\nu}(x) = \phi^2(x) \bar{g}_{\mu\nu}(x)$. This reduces complexity from $O(n^2)$ independent components to a single scalar field.* Dual Dynamics: The system combines global search with local refinement via semantic diffusion, governed by the heat equation on the manifold: $\frac{\partial s}{\partial t} = \Delta_g s$. Geometric Diagnostics: The framework introduces five geometric invariants to characterize the "shape" of information:1. Discrete Yamabe Invariant ($Y_{disc}$): Measures conformal flatness and hierarchical structure.2. Angular Spectral Contrast ($A_{spec}$): Measures anisotropy and directional preference.3. Asymptotic Volume Ratio ($V_{ratio}$): Compares volume growth against Euclidean space.4. Renormalization Exponent ($\alpha_{renorm}$): Captures multi-scale, fractal-like behavior.5. Screening Length ($\xi$): Measures the decay of semantic correlations over distance. Scope and Extensions: Beyond retrieval, GRAVITAS extends to GRAVITAS-NLP, integrating Riemannian geometry into transformer architectures by replacing Euclidean dot products with learned metrics $D_g(q, k) = \sqrt{g_{\mu\nu}(q, k)(q - k)^\mu (q - k)^\nu}$. It also explores "The Cosmology of Ideas," investigating theoretical constructs such as semantic black holes (dominant conceptual attractors), semantic wormholes (interdisciplinary shortcuts), and thermodynamics of meaning where entropy $S(\Omega) = -\sum p_i \log p_i$ governs cluster stability. This research transforms IR from a statistical discipline into a geometric-physical one, offering new insights into the ontology of meaning and the ethics of metric design.
