Abstract

Recommendations toward a framework for adoption and use of persistentidentifiers (PIDs) for research facilities and instrumentation based on the activities ofthe “FAIR Facilities and Instruments” U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) FindableAccessible Interoperable Reusable Open Science (FAIROS) Research CoordinationNetwork (RCN) (NSF Awards 2226396, 2226397, 2226398). These recommendationswere developed over the course of the project, which included three in-person RCNworkshops in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Draft recommendations were discussed andrefined by a variety of stakeholder groups in advance of the RCN’s final in-personworkshop in Boulder, CO in September 2025 where the recommendations were vettedby the broader community and then finalized asynchronously after the workshop.
