Asal-Usul Penggunaan Batu Padas dalam Seni Rupa Bali
Abstract
This paper discusses the origins and development of the use of paras stone in Balinese visual art, from its traditional functions to its role in contemporary artistic practice. Paras stone is examined as a material with aesthetic, symbolic, and spiritual value, as well as its close connection to sacred architecture, sculpture, and environment-based artworks. The study also highlights the shift in the use of paras stone from monumental forms toward experimental approaches, including installation practices and stone-stacking as an exploration of space, balance, and ecological awareness. In this way, paras stone is understood not only as a material, but as a cultural medium that bridges tradition and innovation in Balinese art.
