Adaptation Without Guaranteed Convergence in Uncertain Environments: inZOR-ND, an Operational Exploratory System
Abstract
inZOR-ND is an operational exploratory system designed to study and operate in environments where convergence is unreliable, premature optimization is harmful, and outcomes depend strongly on context. Unlike classical optimization, machine learning, or reinforcement learning systems, inZOR-ND does not search for a single optimal solution. Instead, it preserves and evaluates multiple competing strategies over time, allowing adaptive behaviour to emerge through selection rather than explicit training or reward maximization. The system has been implemented and tested across controlled experimental settings involving uncertainty, irreversible constraints, and changing environments. These tests demonstrate inZOR-ND’s ability to:– maintain strategic diversity,– expose trade-offs between objectives,– reveal context-dependent behaviour, and– identify robustness limits that remain hidden in convergent systems. inZOR-ND belongs to a broader class of Artificial Emergent eXploratory Systems (AExS), where exploration, selection, and adaptation arise from local interactions rather than global objectives or learned models. This work positions inZOR-ND as a complementary system to existing AI, ML, and optimization approaches, particularly for scientific, engineering, and policy domains where understanding system behaviour, failure modes, and adaptability is as important as performance itself. https://dumitrunovic-svg.github.io/inZOR-ND/index.html
