Abstract

Between 2003 and 2006, the Bartz server of the MMORPG Lineage 2 became the stage for one of the most significant player-driven revolutions in gaming history. The Dragon Knights (DK) Alliance, through overwhelming military dominance and coordinated social control, established an authoritarian regime that dictated hunting zones, imposed transaction taxes, and exercised tyrannical authority over the server’s 200,000+ users. When the DK Alliance raised its tax rate to 15%, a grassroots resistance movement emerged—one that would ultimately mobilize players across multiple servers in a fight for digital freedom. An anonymous declaration of independence, posted to the game’s official forums, ignited what came to be known as the Bartz Revolution. The ensuing Bartz Revolutionary Army united 32 guilds and over 200,000 players—including thousands who created new characters solely to participate in the struggle. Through innovative tactics, such as deploying low-level characters as human shields and executing sustained, coordinated assaults, the resistance ultimately overthrew the DK Alliance. The Bartz Liberation War demonstrated that collective action can dismantle even the most entrenched concentrations of power—whether in physical or virtual domains. This paper analyzes the Bartz Liberation War through the theoretical frameworks of collective action, virtual resistance movements, and digital political economy. It examines how this large-scale gaming conflict mirrored real-world dynamics of oppression, taxation, revolution, and the triumph of democratic ideals over authoritarian rule.
