Abstract

This self-authored introductory monograph provides a comprehensive overview of hodoscopes — segmented scintillator-based detectors used for high-precision tracking of charged particles, cosmic-ray muons, and other ionizing radiation. Beginning with the fundamentals of scintillation processes and light production, the text progresses through optical transport, losses, photodetection (with emphasis on photomultiplier tubes), dynode gain, signal formation, timing phenomena (including afterglow and metastable states), and full readout electronics. Key topics include: - Ionization tracks and dE/dx in scintillators - Light yield, efficiency, and Birks' law saturation - Angular, colloidal, and reflective optical losses - PMT internals: secondary emission, resistive chains, gain variance, dark current, rise/fall times - Metastable states leading to tail-peak and multi-component pulses - Coincidence timing, position reconstruction in X-Y bar hodoscopes, and basic signal theory The monograph combines theoretical derivations, practical approximations, and illustrative plots/waveforms, making it suitable for undergraduate/graduate-level education, laboratory experiments, or introductory research in nuclear/particle physics instrumentation. Intended as an accessible self-contained resource for students, educators, and early-career researchers interested in cosmic-ray detection, muon tomography, and scintillator-based tracking systems.
