A Comprehensive Review on Novel Drug Delivery Systems: Current Status and Future Prospects
Abstract
Introduction: Novel Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS) represent a transformative shift in pharmaceutical sciences, aimed at overcoming the limitations of conventional dosage forms. Conventional systems often face challenges such as low bioavailability, chemical instability, and fluctuations in plasma drug levels. Objective: This review explores various NDDS strategies designed to deliver therapeutic agents at a controlled rate and to specific target sites, thereby enhancing efficacy and reducing systemic toxicity. Methodology: The study categorizes several advanced delivery technologies, including vesicular systems, particulate systems and specialized administration routes such as Transdermal, Nasal, and Ocular delivery. Key Findings: NDDS provides significant advantages, such as protection of drugs from degradation, sustained release, and improved patient compliance. Specifically, technologies like Phytosomes improve the absorption of herbal extracts, while Nanoparticles (10-1000 nm) allow for precise site-specific targeting. However, challenges such as high manufacturing costs and the need for sophisticated technology remain. Conclusion: NDDS is a vital innovation in modern medicine that optimizes the therapeutic lifecycle of drug molecules and paves the way for more efficient healthcare solutions.
