Stable Homotopy Groups of Spheres and the Telescope Conjecture in Chromatic Homotopy Theory
Abstract
This monograph explores the structural intricacies of the stable homotopy groups of spheres, *(S), through the lens of chromatic homotopy theory. We systematically develop the machinery of the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, the Brown-Peterson spectrum BP, and the associated Morava K-theories K(n), which stratify the stable homotopy category by height. Central to this exposition is the Telescope Conjecture, the last and most elusive of Ravenel's conjectures, which posited an equivalence between the telescopic localization Lnf and the chromatic localization Ln. We provide a rigorous analysis of the chromatic filtration and the periodicity phenomena governed by vn-self maps. Crucially, we discuss the recent, definitive disproof of the Telescope Conjecture for heights n 2 by Burklund, Hahn, Levy, and Schlank (2023), detailing the K-theoretic obstructions and the failure of the chromatic convergence to capture the full telescopic homotopy type. The implications of this result for the global structure of Sp are examined.
