Structural Demonstration of the Inevitability of Chemical Oscillations in Non-Equilibrium Systems
Abstract
This work presents a structural mathematical demonstration of the necessary emergence of temporal oscillations in homogeneous chemical systems driven out of equilibrium. The demonstration does not rely on specific kinetic models. Instead, it is based exclusively on general structural properties: local positive feedback, global depletion mechanisms, conservation constraints, and negative average energetic contraction. Under these hypotheses, the existence of a globally monotonic equilibrium is shown to be incompatible with the system structure, implying bounded recurrence or oscillatory behavior as a necessary consequence. The result provides a model-independent explanation for the ubiquity of chemical oscillations in non-equilibrium systems.
