The Morphodynamics of Y as a Ghost Connector Relational Phonology and Directed Vowel Trajectories
Abstract
This article argues that Y is neither a vowel, nor a glide, nor an energy conduit. Y is instead aghost connector: a silent predicator and directional operator that assigns transitions betweenvowel states within a universal vowel well. Under this reconceptualization, English “diphthongs”are not vowel blends and not vowel+glide sequences. Their nucleus is a single trajectoryobject—a predicated transition—generated by an operator of the form Y(v₁ , v₂ ) and notrepresentable as a static feature bundle. In CVC structures, Y never fills the V-slot; the trajectoryfills it. The account also rejects an empty-nucleus analysis and does not treat Y as agoverning/licensing head; instead, nucleus formation is typed as state versus trajectory. Finally, the theory connects abstract predication to physical realization through a commutative interfacediagram, preserving systematic correspondence while rejecting identity betweenmorphodynamical transitions and articulatory gestures
