Source code of the DiMAT Materials Processing Simulator - MPS Composite Toolkit
Abstract
The Material Processing Simulator toolkit is developed using free software, including FreeCAD, PrePoMax, CalculiX, and OpenFOAM, which opens the possibility of customization. The combination of these components provides a dependable pathway for predicting the behaviour of materials under given processing conditions, which can be replicated, adjusted, and tailored to meet specific requirements. The MPS toolkit provides a digital interface with graphical contours to facilitate analysis of simulation results. The simulation of materials processing is generated by specific CAD geometry and boundary conditions using finite element Analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In the case of the pilot composite, the MPS toolkit focuses on the curing process of epoxy resin. To achieve this objective, a specific resin has been simulated in a mold of fixed geometry, incorporating its thermal and chemical properties. As a result, obtaining the degree of cure and the curing time based on temperature. The model was built in OpenFOAM by modifying an existing solver, providing the technical foundation for the new solver's computational fluid dynamics (CFD) capabilities.
