Abstract

India and South Africa share a long-standing economic and strategic partnership rooted in historical ties, South–South cooperation, and common membership in platforms such as BRICS, G20, IBSA, and the WTO. Over the years, bilateral business relations have expanded steadily, making India one of South Africa’s most important trading and investment partners in Asia. Bilateral trade between India and South Africa has shown consistent growth, crossing USD 15 billion in recent years. India primarily exports pharmaceuticals, automobiles and auto components, textiles, engineering goods, chemicals, and IT services, while South Africa exports gold, coal, minerals, precious stones, and agricultural products to India. The trade relationship is largely complementary, with India benefiting from South Africa’s rich mineral resources and South Africa gaining access to India’s manufacturing and service capabilities. Indian companies have made significant investments in South Africa in sectors such as telecommunications, banking, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, mining, and information technology. Major Indian firms like Tata Group, Mahindra & Mahindra, Cipla, Ranbaxy, and Infosys have a strong presence in South Africa, contributing to employment generation and skill development.
