Abstract

We have developed a field survey protocol that summarizes the main steps, procedures, and approaches for surveying mammals in Rugezi Marsh, a Ramsar site in north-eastern Rwanda, inspired by our field experiences. Such protocols provide general considerations for planning and initiating mammal surveys in a tropical wetland, detail the methodological particularities for sampling mammals (except bats), such as Sherman, pitfall, cage, and camera traps, and provide data sheets for field surveys of mammals that can be adapted as needed by the user. Furthermore, we shared the dataset of mammals recorded during a pilot biodiversity survey in Rugezi Marsh that will be available to interested users at any time.
