The Destination of Knowledge Should Not Be the Cage of Journals: On the Regeneration and Exit of Human Civilization
Abstract
This paper criticizes the current traditional journal system represented by Nature and Science for deviating from the original purpose of knowledge serving humanity. It points out that these journals have commodified knowledge, monopolized the right to disseminate knowledge, and prioritized commercial interests and academic games over solving human survival problems. Such a system has led to catastrophic consequences including delayed Ebola prevention and control, hindered global climate action, exacerbated ozone layer destruction, wasted medical research resources, and ignored disaster warnings. Driven by merchants' profit-seeking logic, traditional journals have become a tumor that sucks the blood of human civilization, trapping scholars and blocking the free circulation of life-saving and progress-promoting knowledge. The paper advocates for the complete replacement of traditional journals with intelligent journal systems that serve all humanity, which judge knowledge value based on three dimensions of past, present and future significance to humanity, realizing the free flow of knowledge. This reform is regarded as the self-salvation of human civilization, aiming to break the shackles of the outdated knowledge system and ensure the survival and sustainable development of human civilization.
