Abstract

Shadow AI refers to the unsanctioned use of artificial intelligence tools and models within an organization, adopted by employees without formal approval or oversight. With the rise of accessible generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot) in the workplace, many employees are leveraging these technologies through personal accounts or unofficial means, creating a parallel “shadow” AI ecosystem. This white paper examines how enterprises can transition from shadow AI to strategic AI management. This paper discusses methods to discover unsanctioned AI usage, techniques to classify and score risks based on data sensitivity, processing purpose, and jurisdiction, and a phased containment and remediation plan. The plan includes options to register shadow AI tools in an inventory, sandbox them in controlled environments, or block them when necessary. This paper also helps to outline a communications strategy to ensure business leaders and employees are aligned on AI governance. By implementing risk-based controls and transparent communication, organizations can harness the innovation of AI while protecting sensitive data and complying with regulatory requirements.
