THE ROLE OF CONVERSION AND AFFIXATION IN LEXICAL RENEWAL IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK
Abstract
Lexical renewal is one of the most dynamic processes in language development, reflecting social, cultural and technological changes. This article investigates the role of conversion and affixation as major word-formation mechanisms contributing to lexical renewal in English and Uzbek. Relying on the theoretical frameworks of H. Marchand and I. Plag, as well as Uzbek linguists such as Z. Mukhtorov and M. Yo‘ldoshev, the study provides a comparative analysis of these processes. The findings show that conversion is highly productive in English due to its analytic structure, while affixation dominates in Uzbek as a result of its agglutinative morphology.
