The Shadow Domain: Memory Without Authority in Coherence-Preserving Systems
Abstract
Complex systems that preserve identity across change must distinguish between what can be learned and what must only be remembered. This paper introduces the concept of a Shadow Domain: a sealed, non-authoritative memory space for observations that reveal failure modes, boundary conditions, or extreme regimes but cannot be integrated into system identity without violating invariants. The Shadow Domain preserves descriptive knowledge of rupture while explicitly forbidding optimization, learning, or decision authority. By separating memory from power, the approach prevents both naïve forgetting and dangerous assimilation. The concept applies across domains including artificial intelligence safety, governance systems, security incident forensics, and psychological models of trauma. This paper is architectural and conceptual; it introduces no algorithms, implementations, or operational guidance.
