Abstract

This study investigates how health consciousness and perceived quality influence consumers’ purchase intention toward functional foods in Pakistan, a developing market experiencing rapid dietary transitions, rising non-communicable diseases, and increasing awareness of preventive health solutions. Functional foods, positioned between conventional nutrition and health-enhancing products, have gained global relevance; however, their acceptance in Pakistan remains inconsistent due to limited consumer trust, varying perceptions of quality, and uneven health awareness across socio-economic segments. This research is motivated by the need to understand the behavioral mechanisms that shape consumer decision-making in the functional food sector, particularly within a context where regulatory clarity, product standardization, and consumer education are still evolving. Grounded in consumer behavior and technology-related trust perspectives, the study conceptualizes health consciousness as a key individual-level driver that motivates consumers to seek health-oriented food options, while perceived quality is examined as a critical evaluative factor that translates health motivation into actual purchase intention. The research further recognizes the indirect influence of supporting constructs such as consumer trust, perceived food safety, social influence, perceived ease of use, and trust in technology, while accounting for usage frequency as a moderating factor that intensifies or weakens behavioral relationships. Using a quantitative research design, the study aims to empirically test the proposed conceptual framework within Pakistan’s functional food market by collecting data from consumers who are aware of or have experience with functional food products. The findings are expected to provide nuanced insights into why health-oriented products succeed or fail in emerging economies despite growing health awareness.
