Abstract
The metaverse in recent years has become a global trend and is creating a transhumanist environment. Metaverse has been utilized in various fields such as education, health, business, entertainment, and even for designing a smart city. The goals of smart cities are to advance economic development, update public services, enhance accessibility, encourage sustainability, and enhance the quality of life for all residents. In light of this, it is possible that the metaverse will have a substantial impact on the development of a positive tech culture in a smart city. Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotics are used to give meaning to the symbols used to represent smart cities in the metaverse. The semiotic analysis's findings indicate that the green capital stands in for the newly established national capital (ibu kota negara, or IKN Nusantara), which is situated in a Kalimantan Forest with an abundance of trees. This paper discusses how leveraging the metaverse presents innovation and generates significant improvements for smart cities. IKN Nusantara is building sustainable infrastructure and creating a positive technology culture. Afterwards, we list the obstacles to the achievement of smart city representation in the metaverse and critically examine them. Lastly, the article makes recommendations for future research paths to fully realize the promise of smart cities in the metaverse.
