Connecting with Democracy - a Pedagogical Framework for Education for Democracy
Abstract
This framework addresses the urgent democratic challenges of declining trust, social and political polarisation, disinformation, inequality, and weakening civic participation by proposing a broader understanding of education for democracy. Developed through the AECED project, it argues that democracy should not be approached only as a body of knowledge or a set of institutional procedures, but also as a lived, relational, and embodied experience. In response, the framework introduces Aesthetic and Embodied Learning for Democracy (AELD), an approach that places movement, feeling, listening, creative expression, reflection, and relational awareness at the centre of democratic learning. Drawing on participatory action research conducted across six European countries and multiple educational phases, the framework shows that aesthetic and embodied pedagogies can cultivate democratic qualities such as empathy, humility, respect, responsiveness, and active listening. It also demonstrates how these approaches can deepen learners’ awareness of themselves, others, and their environments, while supporting more inclusive, participatory, and meaningful forms of knowledge creation. The framework is grounded in key ideas including democracy-as-becoming, holistic democracy, responsive pedagogy, democratic sensibility, and the acceptive gaze. Intended for educators, facilitators, leaders, researchers, and policy-makers, this framework offers a flexible and adaptable foundation for educational practice across diverse cultural and institutional contexts. Rather than prescribing a fixed model, it invites users to explore how democracy can be felt, enacted, and learned collectively through aesthetic and embodied forms of engagement.
