Abstract

ABSTRACTThis empirical study explores the contribution of vocational education to poverty reduction among rural residents in Nigeria, especially the issues and opportunities that can increase employment opportunities and self-sufficiency. The main aim of the research was to assess the role of vocational education in reducing poverty in rural areas and to determine the challenges that impede its successful execution. The conceptual framework of the research was based on the Human Capital Theory, according to which the investments in education and training result in the increased productivity and better economic performance. The qualitative methodological approach was used, and secondary data were generated from textbooks, academic journals, and governmental publications. The empirical evidence showed that poor infrastructure, lack of funding and government support are major obstacles to the success of vocational education in rural Nigeria. However, vocational education has shown potential in helping rural dwellers to move out of subsistence farming to value-added agricultural businesses, which could boost household incomes and lead to local economic growth. The research found that poverty in rural regions can be reduced through proper vocational education provided that the government invests well and develops the infrastructure. According to these results, the study suggests more investment in infrastructure, more government funding, and more effective industry partnerships to enhance the effectiveness of vocational training. Promotion of vocational education as a career option, especially in rural areas, should also be a priority of policymakers to promote more people to participate in it and ensure long-term economic growth.
