Abstract

This paper explores the intricate relationship between the combinatorial structure of root systems and the analytical tools of spectral geometry to uncover profound, often hidden, symmetries within Lie algebras. Lie algebras serve as fundamental mathematical structures for describing continuous symmetries in various branches of mathematics and physics. Central to the classification and representation theory of semisimple Lie algebras are root systems, which are finite configurations of vectors in a Euclidean space possessing remarkable intrinsic symmetries, notably those of the Weyl group. Spectral geometry, traditionally concerned with the interplay between the geometric properties of a manifold and the eigenvalues of its associated differential operators, such as the Laplace-Beltrami operator, offers a powerful lens through which to examine these algebraic structures. We propose a framework for applying spectral-geometric techniques to root systems by associating them with appropriate geometric domains, such as Weyl chambers or related symmetric spaces. By defining a suitable Laplace-type operator on these domains, we demonstrate how the analysis of its spectrum---its eigenvalues and eigenfunctions---can reveal algebraic and geometric invariants that characterize the underlying Lie algebra. This approach provides an alternative and complementary perspective to traditional algebraic methods for symmetry detection, offering a deeper understanding of the inherent structure of Lie algebras. The paper reviews pertinent literature in Lie theory and spectral geometry, outlines a rigorous methodology for constructing and analyzing these spectral problems, presents theoretical results illustrating how spectral degeneracies correspond to specific Weyl group symmetries, and discusses the broader implications for classification theory and mathematical physics. We conclude by highlighting the potential for future research into inverse spectral problems for root systems and generalizations to other infinite-dimensional Lie-theoretic constructions.
