Abstract

This repository provides a collection of Python-based tools for visualization, synthetic diagnostics, and post-processing analysis of three-dimensional plasma simulation data produced by the iPIC3D / ECSIM framework. The toolkit is designed to operate directly on native ECSIM HDF5 outputs, enabling efficient and transparent analysis workflows without the need for extensive data conversion or preprocessing. The software includes modules for interactive three-dimensional field visualization, synthetic spacecraft flybys and probe-based diagnostics, magnetic and kinetic energy spectra, structure functions for turbulence characterization, and plasma beta and pressure anisotropy analysis. Together, these tools facilitate both qualitative exploration and quantitative investigation of complex plasma processes in fully three-dimensional simulations. The primary scientific applications of the toolkit include: Magnetic reconnection in kinetic and particle-in-cell simulations Plasma turbulence, multiscale dynamics, and energy cascade studies Synthetic diagnostics for comparison with in-situ spacecraft observations (e.g. MMS-like measurements) The project emphasizes physical interpretability, minimal software dependencies, and reproducibility. It is intended as a lightweight but extensible research toolkit for plasma physicists studying reconnection-driven turbulence, particle energization, and three-dimensional kinetic plasma dynamics. Collaborations are welcome. For updated (& bug corrected) versions of the code, keep an eye on the GitHub repo.
