Abstract

Modern civilization is not collapsing because reality is fragile, but because we have forced a living, generative world into rigid, measurable fragments. This paper reveals how the systemic overuse of “strong constraints” — the compulsion to crystallize everything into discrete, optimized units — underlies today’s ecological, social, psychological, and AI-driven crises. Highlights Proposes a unified Φ–G–S phase framework linking quantum measurement, social metrics, AI optimization, and ecological collapse. Reinterprets “particles” as low-freedom phases produced by strong constraints, not as reality’s default building blocks. Identifies modern civilization as a regime of permanent phase asymmetry, privileging discrete, controllable forms over generative flows. Explains contemporary crises as the externalized entropy cost of systemic granulation. Introduces “Re-Waving” (constraint relaxation) as a civilizational strategy to restore generative balance without abandoning scientific or technological progress. Overview This paper develops a phase-theoretic ontology to diagnose the deep structure of contemporary global crises. Using the Φ–G–S model—where Φ denotes a generative phase field, G a constraining operation, and S a stabilized image—it argues that reality fundamentally supports two symmetric modes of manifestation: high-freedom, relational “wave-like” phases and low-freedom, discrete “particle-like” phases. While both are ontologically valid, modern civilization has institutionalized a persistent asymmetry that privileges discrete, measurable, and controllable forms. Drawing on analogies from quantum measurement, thermodynamic phase transitions, and complex systems theory, the paper reframes “particles” as phases stabilized under strong constraints rather than as primitive constituents of reality. Extending this logic beyond physics, it demonstrates how industrial extraction, KPI-driven governance, identity fixation, and AI optimization all function as large-scale granulation mechanisms. These processes compress generative, context-rich fields into rigid units—commodities, metrics, labels, and outputs—while externalizing the energetic and entropic costs of such compression. The resulting ecological degradation, social polarization, psychological burnout, and semantic impoverishment are interpreted as manifestations of a deeper civilizational phase imbalance. The paper concludes by proposing constraint relaxation (“Re-Waving”) as a systemic corrective: the deliberate restoration of spaces where ambiguity, relationality, and open-ended generativity can coexist with necessary structures. Rather than rejecting science or order, this approach seeks to reestablish a dynamic balance between flow and form, preventing further collapse of the generative substrate upon which civilization depends.
