Knowledge Portrait: A Socially Recognized Identity of Knowledge
Abstract
Current academic and professional evaluation systems rely heavily on self-reporting and quantitative metrics, often overlooking “hidden” contributions such as conceptual collaboration, intellectual mediation, and tacit knowledge. This article introduces Knowledge Portrait (KP), a conceptual framework for representing an individual’s intellectual identity through traces of recognition from others—including mentions, conceptual citations, acknowledgements, and endorsements. Unlike traditional evaluative metrics, KP decouples intellectual identity from self-claims and competitive ranking, instead interpreting social recognition as contextual and relational evidence of knowledge-in-use. The Potential for a Gratitude Economy.Beyond recognition alone, the Knowledge Portrait framework opens conceptual space for what may be described as a Gratitude Economy within knowledge ecosystems. By making distributed and socially grounded traces of intellectual contribution visible—without centralization or numerical scoring—KP enables voluntary and non-competitive forms of reciprocity, such as micro-donations or intellectual gratuity. These practices do not function as payment for knowledge, but as expressions of appreciation toward the “seeds of thought,” conceptual catalysts, and intellectual support that often remain uncompensated in product- or output-centered economies. In this sense, Knowledge Portrait may serve not only as a supplementary cognitive framework, but also as a normative lens for rethinking how intellectual contribution is acknowledged and sustained in contemporary knowledge societies.
