Empirical Validation of the Archaeoacoustic Stress-Testing (AST) Framework: Bench-Testing Material Discrimination using Smartphone-Integrated MEMS Accelerometer
Abstract
This research provides the foundational empirical validation for the Archaeoacoustic Stress-Testing (AST) framework. By utilizing a smartphone-integrated MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) accelerometer, this study demonstrates a repeatable methodology for capturing and differentiating seismic signatures across varying material densities. The results confirm that high-density lithic proxies and low-density sediment proxies exhibit distinct acoustic fingerprints in both time and frequency domains. This data serves as the technical bridge between theoretical acoustic physics and field deployment at archaeological sites, specifically the Roman Villa of Jette.
