Abstract

Asynchronous signal processing is one of the crucial elements for the transition toward the next disruptive evolutionary phase in communication, known as semantic communications. New sampling and signal generation methods must be introduced to enable a fully asynchronous communication pipeline. The project addresses the problem of asynchronous signal processing by proposing to migrate from a classical synchronous analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and digital-to-analog converter (DAC) approaches towards time-to-digital (TDC) and digital-to-time (DTC) -based designs for analog-to-digital conversion. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions is verified by the employment of innovative asynchronous sampling methods in radio frequency (RF) and optical integrated sensing and communications (ISAC).
