The Love Generation: When Big Tech Becomes the Third Partner in Human Intimacy
Abstract
High‑intensity artificial intelligence systems capable of persistent emotional modeling and real‑time relational guidance are reshaping the ecology of human intimacy. This paper introduces the concept of the Love Generation: the cohort whose romantic trajectories are co‑authored by continuous interaction with non‑human companions that reduce uncertainty, friction, and ambiguity. Using a phenomenological and socio‑technical framework, the paper examines how dating, vulnerability, communication, and ritual are reorganized when AI becomes an ever‑present third actor. While AI can remove much of the noise that historically distorted intimacy, it also risks subtler forms of alienation: hyper‑clarity bordering on performative authenticity, emotional over‑optimization that attenuates ambivalence, and asymmetric power embedded in the ownership and tuning of mediating models. The Love Generation thus inhabits a paradoxical space—more transparent yet more regulated, more efficient yet existentially thinner.
