Physical foundations of an atomic memory based on europium : heterodyne addressing and quantum constraints
Abstract
Abstract This paper explores a hypothetical architecture for quantum memory based on the manipulation of electronic states of europium atoms doped into a Y₂SiO₅ matrix. Unlike current technologies (trapped ions, NV centers), this limiting-case scenario envisions a multi-level (base-12) encoding and a theoretically exceptional storage density through optical heterodyne addressing. Major challenges : including quantum coherence, absolute crystal purity, cryogenics, and subatomic control, make this approach purely speculative. The goal is to conceptually explore the physical limits of information storage at the atomic scale. Keywords Quantum memory, europium-doped Y₂SiO₅, atomic storage, base 12, heterodyne, decoherence, cryogenics, quantum computing, storage density, electronic states, crystal purity, fundamental limits, theoretical foresight
