L3-Stage Engine
Abstract
The L3-Stage Engine serves as a definitive proof of concept that software-level memory orchestration can effectively mitigate the physical bottlenecks of the PCIe bus. By bypassing standard OS pageable memory constraints and leveraging high-priority asynchronous streams, we achieved ~78% of the theoretical peak throughput of a PCIe 3.0 x16 interface. In the context of Large Language Model (LLM) serving, these gains are transformative. As model parameters grow into the hundreds of billions, the time spent "streaming" weights from system RAM to GPU VRAM becomes the primary latency driver. The architecture proposed here—combining Rust’s safety, CUDA’s hardware access, and Huge Page efficiency—reduces data transfer overhead by over 165%. This shift from a synchronous, blocking model to an asynchronous, zero-copy pipeline provides a scalable blueprint for next-generation inference engines where time-to-first-token is the critical metric.
