Anonymous : The Hacktivist Sphere and Power Strategies – An Analysis of Power Dynamics in Contemporary Cyberspace
Abstract
Abstract This work examines the ambiguous nature of the Anonymous collective, positioned at the intersection between spontaneous digital activism and state instrumentalization. Drawing on Bourdieu’s sociology of fields, resource mobilization theory (McCarthy & Zald), and scholarship on cyberwarfare (Arquilla & Ronfeldt), the analysis explores how Anonymous operates within a logic of delegated digital violence. Based on open‑source materials, testimonies, and cybersecurity reports, the study highlights mechanisms of co‑optation, narrative blurring, and alignment with Western strategic priorities. Anonymous thus appears less as a unified actor than as a contested arena where activist logics, individual opportunism, and state strategies intersect. Keywords Anonymous, Pierre Bourdieu, hacktivism, cyberwarfare, WikiLeaks, intelligence, delegation of digital violence, information warfare, sociology of social movements, LulzSec
