DIGITAL RESILIENCE AND THE IMPACT OF AI-GENERATED MISINFORMATION: A STUDY ON MARGINALIZED COASTAL COMMUNITIES OF HATIYA, BANGLADESH
Abstract
Abstract This research paper analyzes the current state of digital literacy in Hatiya, a coastal island upazila of Bangladesh, with a specific focus on misinformation generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its social, economic, and psychological impacts. The primary objective of the study is to assess the ability of the island’s marginalized population to recognize AI-generated content, examine their level of digital resilience, and explore how such misinformation affects their daily lives, livelihoods, and social relationships. Due to geographical isolation from the mainland, limited communication infrastructure, and a lack of institutional information sources, the residents of Hatiya are heavily dependent on social media for information. This dependency has created a vulnerable environment for the rapid spread of AI-driven misinformation. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research analyzes data collected from 500 diverse participants. The findings indicate that approximately 60% of the surveyed respondents are unable to correctly identify AI-generated content, which significantly increases their risk of social instability, financial fraud, and misinformed decision-making. Fishermen and housewives were identified as the most vulnerable groups. In response, the study proposes a five-tier intervention framework, including union-based fact-checking networks, school-based AI awareness programs, active engagement of community leaders, digital crime support services at local police stations, and awareness campaigns through radio and SMS. Overall, this research presents a comprehensive picture of digital literacy and AI-based misinformation in isolated coastal regions like Hatiya and offers practical policy guidelines to enhance the digital security and resilience of marginalized communities.
