Boundary Condition Robustness as a Necessary Condition for Standing
Abstract
This paper shows that if epistemic standing is to be preserved under admissible variation of boundary conditions, then robustness of those boundary conditions is a necessary requirement. When boundary specifications are permitted to change within an admissible range, any dependence of standing on finely tuned or fragile boundary choices leads to representational instability. In such cases, small admissible perturbations produce discontinuous failures of standing, indicating that the boundary conditions themselves are not admissibly licensed. The result is conditional and eliminative. It does not assert which boundary conditions must be imposed, nor does it propose a mechanism for enforcing robustness. Instead, it establishes that boundary conditions which fail to remain stable under admissible variation cannot support standing. Any description whose validity depends on boundary sensitivity is therefore excluded as standing-preserving, independently of the underlying domain or interpretive context.
