Shared Story-Building

This repository contains the code of the shared story-building system as described in the paper "Il était une fois… a Storytelling Robot that used Generative AI for Engaging Language Practice", by authors that remain anonymous during the review process. The system described in the paper and in this repository is a shared story-building system for conversational practice with a social robot. The goal is to have an adaptive, personalised story whose narrative can be steered by the user. For the user study, vocabulary was inserted into the stories, to allow for measuring a learning gain. A separate version was made were the user has no influence on the narrative. All of this is included in this repository. Some of the user facing text is in Dutch, given that the user study took place with Dutch speaking participants. This should be easily adapted to a different context. This repository contains the python server and the UI, but requires a Furhat robot (physical or virtual), an OpenAI api key and a server running an image generation model to run the full system.
