Abstract

This presentation introduces the concept of research ethics by clarifying how the term is defined and how it relates to adjacent concepts and discourses. It then provides a brief overview of the historical development of ethics governance, with a particular focus on its origins in medical research. Building on this background, the presentation addresses the ongoing debate surrounding ethics review procedures. Subsequently, it examines the current landscape of research ethics in Germany, with specific attention to the social sciences and humanities. Current challenges are discussed with reference to findings from the CHANGER project. The presentation concludes with key take-home messages, references to relevant online resources, and an invitation to discussion.
