Abstract

Writing on peace, conflict, and violence is an emerging genre in literature. This has been particularly popular in regions that have a long history of conflict and violence between people, as well as between the people and the government. This emerging style is more popular among those literary figures who are themselves a part of it. Specifically, women appear to be closer to the incidents of conflict and violence. Generally, they are targeted during conflicts and become the primary victims of any struggle. Therefore, due to their proximity to conflict and violence, women writers write about struggle, violence, and peace in a much better way than men. Several popular women writers from Northeast India have written about their experiences and perspectives on conflict and violence across various literary forms—such as poetry, short stories, novels, accounts, books, and articles. Women writers from Manipur have also shared their views on the long-standing conflict and violence in the state. Among them, the “Iron Lady of Manipur,” Irom Sharmila, has written several poems depicting the situation of conflict in Manipur. Consequently, in the present article, an attempt has been made to analyse the trajectory of conflict writing in North East India in general, and specifically in the context of Irom Sharmila. An important analytical framework is employed in this paper to examine the metaphors of struggle in Irom Sharmila’s writing.
