An Independent Urdu Translation and Cultural Adaptation of WHO Problem Management Plus (PM+) for the Pakistani Context: An Independent Academic Report
Abstract
Problem Management Plus (PM+) is a low-intensity, evidence-based psychologicalintervention developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to help adults manage stress, anxiety, and depression in adversity-exposed communities. This report documents anindependent, student-led translation and cultural adaptation of the WHO PM+ individual trainingmanual (2025) into simple, natural Urdu for potential use in Pakistan. The adaptation prioritizesconceptual fidelity, linguistic accessibility, and cultural relevance, incorporating examples fromPakistani realities (e.g., floods, earthquakes, family conflicts, poverty). Key elements include ameaning-based translation style, Pakistan-specific contextualization, illustrative Urdu excerpts, challenges faced, and strict ethical boundaries. No outcome evaluation, clinical testing, pilotstudy, or expert validation was conducted. This work is for educational/research discussiononly—not an official WHO product—and contributes to open-science efforts in global mentalhealth adaptation. With 22% of Pakistanis facing mental distress (WHO, 2022), adaptations likethis enhance access.
