Abstract

Drones 101 is an all-in-one textbook designed to guide an absolute beginner from having zero knowledge to possessing a deep and practical understanding of FPV drones. The goal of this book is to solve the problem of scattered information in the FPV hobby by aggregating the community's vast collective knowledge into a single, logically structured, and freely accessible resource. After reading this guide, a novice will have the foundational knowledge required to confidently select components, understand how they interact, and begin the journey of building and tuning their own custom FPV quadcopter. This textbook covers a wide range of topics in-depth, including: Fundamental Principles of Flight: The basic physics and aerodynamics of how a quadcopter flies and maneuvers. A Deep Dive into Components: Detailed chapters explaining the function and key specifications of every part of a modern FPV drone, including frames, motors, propellers, Electronic Speed Controllers (ESCs), and Flight Controllers (FCs). Practical Selection Guides: Step-by-step, actionable advice on how to choose the right components for a specific build, from calculating thrust requirements to matching a motor's KV rating with a battery. FPV Systems: A complete breakdown of the FPV video system, comparing Analog, DJI, Walksnail, and HDZero to help a new pilot make the most important decision in their FPV journey. FPV Drone Tuning: A guide to the theory and practice of tuning in Betaflight, enhanced with "Diving Deeper" sections that explain the underlying aerospace engineering principles of control theory and state estimation. This textbook is not a work of singular invention but one of careful curation and synthesis. It stands on the shoulders of giants and is deeply indebted to the foundational work of community pioneers like Oscar Liang and Joshua Bardwell, the rigorous engineering theory presented in academic texts like "Small Unmanned Aircraft: Theory and Practice" by Randal W. Beard and Timothy W. McLain , and the collective knowledge base of countless contributors on online communities like Reddit. A special note on the creation of this work: This textbook was compiled and written in collaboration with Google's Gemini. The ability to rapidly research, cross-reference, and synthesize information from the vast array of community sources was made possible through this human-AI partnership. What would have been a year-long endeavor for a one-person team was condensed into a fraction of that time, allowing me to focus on curating and refining the content to be as clear and comprehensive as possible.
