Abstract

Two companion papers examining the same mathematical barrier from computational and physical perspectives. Operational Completeness and the Boundary of Intelligence: An Empirical Theory of Universal Cognitive Limitations in Large Language Models- Empirical documentation of AI failures at self-referential fixed points. Consciousness at the Thermodynamic Measurement Boundary: Where Godel's Incompleteness Is Turing's Halting Problem- A thermodynamic framework for consciousness as an alternative to Penrose's gravitational collapse theory. Both papers build on two foundational works: The KO7 operator kernel (Rahnama, 2025, arXiv:2512.00081), a minimal rewrite system with seven constructors, eight reduction rules, no imported logic, no external axioms. The KO7 paper proved strong normalization for a guarded safe fragment. It conjectures that full system termination cannot be proven by internally definable methods. This gap is the mathematical signature of self-reference. The thermodynamic measurement boundary framework (Rahnama, 2026), which establishes that record formation under Landauer's principle costs at least kB T ln 2 per bit. This framework decomposes quantum measurement into premeasurement (reversible, no heat) and record formation (irreversible, Landauer bound applies), providing the physical grounding for the abstain-or-commit decision. Paper 1 documents what happens when AI systems confront the self-referential barrier. Twenty AI systems were asked to prove termination for KO7's recursive successor rule. Every system failed at the same structural point: the duplication stress at rec_succ, where additive measures cannot decrease. Failures include proofs that do not compile, self-contradictions, and outputs that violate stated constraints. Paper 2 identifies what distinguishes systems that can recognize undecidability. At the point where Turing's Halting Problem becomes Godel's Incompleteness, a decision must be made: abstain or commit. Committing to a classical record costs energy. This framework replaces speculative microtubule quantum coherence with verified thermodynamics and provides an operational definition testable in AI systems.
