Plotbot: Multi-Mission Space Physics Data Visualization, Audification, and Analysis
Abstract
Plotbot is a comprehensive Python toolkit for space physics data visualization, audification, and analysis, currently supporting Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and WIND missions with an extensible framework for additional spacecraft. Developed by Dr. Robert Alexander and Dr. Jaye Verniero (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center), Plotbot provides an intuitive interface for accessing, processing, and plotting heliophysics data through a straightforward class structure (e.g., mag_rtn.br for magnetic field components). Key features include multi-panel time series visualization with plotbot(), comparative analysis across time intervals with multiplot(), hodogram/scatter plotting with showdahodo(), velocity distribution function analysis with vdyes(), and data sonification/audification capabilities via audifier(). The toolkit also offers interactive web-based plotting through Dash/Plotly integration and custom variable creation through arithmetic operations. Plotbot implements a smart data acquisition system with automatic server selection (SPDF/CDAWeb and Berkeley fallback), intelligent caching, and automatic class generation for user-provided CDF files. Designed for both rapid exploratory analysis and publication-ready output, Plotbot streamlines heliophysics workflows from data download through visualization and auditory analysis.
