Superstring theory could be already correct
Abstract
Superstring theory might already be correct, but not in the way you probably imagined. There is a way that a form of superstring theory could already be the correct structure underpinning the Standard Model and gravity. To see how, one needs to appreciate the only truly critical aspect of supersymmetry is anomaly cancellation. In 4D spacetime curing the anomalies requires a ratio of 1::4::6 elementary bosons to fermions to scalars. The CPT-symmetric LR-symmetric Standard Model augmented with $2\times 36$ dimension zero Fradkin--Tseytlin scalars is such a model: the Weyl, trace and vacuum energy anomalies cancel, with the benefit of eliminating the graviton and the Higgs. Gravity must be a hydrodynamics of the fine structure of spacetime, and the Higgs a composite ``particle.'' There already exists a stringy theory with all these characteristics, and moreover in a minimalist way. This theory has the added benefit of shedding a new light on the meaning of quantum mechanics.
