Abstract

This publication introduces an Excel-based decision-support tool for sustainability and emissions managers in companies, supporting the systematic early-stage prioritization of corporate emission-reduction measures. The tool enables decision-makers to compare promising mitigation options by combining indicative cost information with expected emission-reduction impacts, thereby facilitating informed managerial decisions under limited data availability and analytical resources. The tool operationalizes economic reasoning in a pragmatic and accessible format, relying on readily available corporate data and literature-based assumptions on mitigation potentials and cost ranges. A simplified marginal abatement cost (MAC) logic is applied, using ordinal cost scaling and logarithmic transformation of impacts to ensure comparability across heterogeneous measures. Results are presented through a MAC-type visualization and a ranked overview of measures according to their relative cost-effectiveness. Designed explicitly as a preliminary screening and prioritization instrument, the tool does not provide detailed investment appraisals, life-cycle assessments, or feasibility analyses. Instead, it supports a resource-efficient preselection of measures for subsequent in-depth evaluation by technical and domain-specific experts within relevant operational departments. The publication provides both methodological documentation and a reusable tool that can be adapted to different corporate contexts, sectors, and emission profiles.
