Abstract

This article explores literary translation as a key site of intercultural dialogue, focusing on the reception of Romanian literature in the German-speaking world. Drawing on intercultural literary theory, imagology, and discourse analysis, it argues that translation operates not merely as linguistic transfer but as artistic re-creation and cultural mediation. Translators such as Gerhardt Csejka, Ernest Wichner, Eva Ruth Wemme, Jan Cornelius, Anke Pfeifer, and Sevghin Mayr have significantly shaped the visibility of Romanian literature in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The analysis of German reviews and translator interviews highlights the increasing recognition of translators as co-authors and cultural agents. Critics consistently emphasize that translations of writers such as Tatiana Ţîbuleac, Liliana Corobcă, and Oleg Serebrian are not perceived as secondary texts but as autonomous literary events.
