Beyond Naturalness: A New Proposal for a Unified Open-EFT Origin for the Electroweak and Flavor Scales
Abstract
We propose that the Higgs field and Standard Model fermions are open quantum systems coupled to a critical, dissipative continuum. In this Open Effective Field Theory (Open–EFT) framework, all pole masses and widths emerge from vacuum dressing with vanishing bare masses; v = 246 GeV is treated as an IR normalization to express couplings in standard conventions. For the Higgs, the dressed propagator G(s)^-1 = s − Σ(s) yields a complex pole at s⋆ = (mH)^2− i.mH.ΓH , consistent with the observed mass mH ≃ 125.25 GeV and width ΓH ≃ 4.09 MeV . Distinct from unparticle scenarios that yield continuous spectra without poles, or composite models requiring newTeV-scale resonances, our mechanism generates a sharp physical pole solely through environmental dissipation, without breaking the effective field theory description below ΛUV. The pole residue Z ≡ |Z⋆| ≈ 0.36 signals a substantial continuum admixture, predicting suppressed off-shell Higgs production: μoff-shell ≈ 0.13.For fermions, the same continuum generates hierarchical masses through a self-similar scaling law characterized by a universal ratio ϕ ≈ 0.538 across generations. This single relation, supplemented by a QCD-induced dissipative term for quarks, reproduces the observed hierarchies at the 5–15% level in a minimal parameterization. TheCabibbo angle emerges naturally via the Gatto-Sartori-Tonin relation, while the PMNS mixing angles are explained by the absence of strong interaction turbulence in the lepton sector.A Principal Component Analysis of the parameter manifold reveals that the 22+ arbitrary parameters of the Standard Model flavor sector collapse to an effective 5-dimensional description. This frame work provides a unified, causal origin for the electroweak scale and the flavor hierarchy, yielding falsifiable predictions for off-shell Higgs measurements at the HL-LHC and for precision flavor observables.
