Abstract

English This essay offers a genealogical reconstruction of the modern concept of vertigo understood not merely as fear, but as a self-destructive attraction. Starting from Edgar Allan Poe, particularly from The Imp of the Perverse (1845), the study examines one of the early narrative articulations of a psychological structure centered on the irrational impulse toward the abyss. Through textual comparison and dialogue with selected modern philosophical interpretations, the essay argues that Poe’s notion of perverseness functions as a fundamental narrative and symbolic matrix for later formulations of vertigo as a “desire to fall”. The analysis highlights structural continuities between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, despite differences in discursive framing, and suggests that modern vertigo is not a sudden invention but the result of a long literary genealogy.
