From Auxiliary Option to Primary Attachment: The Halo Effect in Retrospective Partner Valuation
Abstract
In the landscape of mate selection, candidates are frequently categorized into Primary Targets (high-idealization, high-risk) and Auxiliary Options (high-availability, low-risk). This report explores the cognitive transmutation that occurs when a subject migrates from the former category to the latter. Through the longitudinal observation of the subject Alex and their partner Sam, we analyze how the utilitarian value of "consistent presence" is alchemically transformed into high-status emotional value. The core mechanic identified is a specific application of the Halo Effect, where the singular high-value trait of Unwavering Validation acts as a radiant core, illuminating and enhancing adjacent, previously neutral traits. This report details the Reconstruction of Value, a process where the brain actively rewrites the history of a relationship to erase the stigma of "settling," thereby elevating a Safe Bet to the status of a Soulmate.
