SSJ (Speed–Struggle–Joy): A Behavioral Framework for Technical Communication
Abstract
This document presents the Polished Edition (2026) of SSJ™ (S: Speed, S: Struggle, J: Joy)(Kataoka 2016), a behavioral framework for technical communication originally formulated in 2016. This edition reorganizes and clarifies the original SSJ principles for broader use, providing a more accessible and internationally readable structure while preserving the intent of the 2016 formulation. The model is based on three behavioral principles: Speed — initiating writing with good timing and producing content efficiently. Struggle — refining ideas through deliberate effort, iteration, and ingenuity. Joy — achieving the intended outcome and reinforcing motivation and learning. This edition reframes these principles for contemporary writing environments, including digital communication and early human–AI collaborative workflows. It introduces clearer terminology, improved conceptual explanations, and a more systematic presentation of the SSJ behavioral sequence. The 2026 Polished Edition serves as a transitional step between the 2016 Historical Edition (Version 1.0) and the fully formalized integration of SSJ within Technorhetoric Version 3.0 (2026). While later versions expand and internationalize the model, this edition remains the key reference for understanding how SSJ evolved from its original formulation toward its modern theoretical structure. This work includes the SSJ™ (S: Speed, S: Struggle, J: Joy)(Kataoka 2016), a trademark under application in Japan.
