Germany's €500 Billion Mistake - Why the 2015 Refugee Investment Will Never Break Even
Abstract
Abstract This report provides a comprehensive examination of Germany's migration-related expenditures from 2015 to 2025, based on official data from the Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt), the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), and leading economic research institutes. The analysis establishes that verified federal spending totals approximately €248.7 billion over the eleven-year period. When combined with state-level expenditures (€80-120 billion) and indirect security-related costs (€60-120 billion), the cumulative total reaches €390-490 billion. Private sector and NGO contributions add an estimated €15-25 billion, far below widely circulated claims of €500 billion in private spending. The analysis further examines the economic contributions of integrated refugees, estimating tax revenues of €20-25 billion annually by 2025, with break-even projections suggesting fiscal neutrality for the 2015 cohort by 2030-2035 under optimistic integration scenarios. Detailed appendices provide comprehensive breakdowns of security-related expenditures and private sector contributions.
